Watershed
The Little Platte Watershed is one of the many watersheds located within Clay County. This Watershed is part of the Kansas City metro area watersheds, which drain into the Missouri River, the world's 15th longest river. The Missouri River Watershed drains one-sixth of the water in the United States.
A Watershed is an area of land that drains into another body of water, such as a nearby creek, stream, river or lake. As an example, when it rains, water may travel down the Little Platte River, into another river or creek, and then will collect water from a larger watershed, which then deposits the water into the Missouri River.
What Can You Do to Protect Your Watershed?
- Landscape with native plants to increase water infiltration and decrease lawn maintenance.
- Never discard trash or waste in ditches, creeks, streams, or lakes.
- Dispose of pet waste properly.
- Redirect downspouts to drain water onto lawns and gardens.
- Wash your vehicle at a professional car wash that filters wastewater or wash your vehicle in a grassy area. Do not wash your car in the street or driveway.
- Use rain barrels or rain gardens to conserve rainwater on your property.
